About the Artist
Candice’s art has been greatly influenced by her unique international background, speaking seven different languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, French, Spanish, Italian, English) and having traveled to or lived in over 30 countries. Each place she has visited has shaped her work in different ways, starting with her studies of Chinese painting and calligraphy as a teenager in Hong Kong, where her 94-year old master Shing-On Tang taught her to endow her brushstrokes with confidence and determination. Other inspirations include simplicity and sophistication of form from Japanese art and design (having gone to school and lived in Japan for 4 years), boldness of color from extended stays in Spain, Oaxaca, Ecuador, and Argentina, and a strong technical foundation in color and composition from the study of Renaissance and Impressionist painters in Italy and France.
Candice was drawn to painting in oil by the freedom, vibrancy, and texture of that medium, but also enjoys the fluidity and expressive nature of watercolor. Her artistic output encompasses landscape, figurative painting, and still life subjects, with much of her work done in plein air (on location), where she feels she is able to best capture the spontaneous moment of light, mood, and color. She sees parallels between her visual art and her Ballet, Flamenco and Argentinian Tango dancing, another life passion, stressing the expression of rhythm and inner soul. Overall, Candice sees her art as a means to share her momentary feelings and experience of each place and time she paints with her viewers.
